You know that 95th birthday celebration for John Dobson, the one I mentioned in my previous post?
Well, I was there.
I made a quick research trip to Los Angeles this weekend for the festivities at the Griffith Observatory, and I got to meet not only Dobson himself but also many telescope makers inspired by him, including the woman who made the telescope shown above. It was thrilling to see the sharp, vivid, craggy horizon of the moon through those Dobsonian telescopes, to hear the fondness with which their builders described the process of making their scopes, and to witness the awestruck reactions of the observatory visitors as they took a gander at the night sky through those humble-looking creations.
Did I mention that I’m excited to be working on this project?
