As I write this, it’s the tenth anniversary of the publication date of The Amazing Age of John Roy Lynch, which I wrote, Don Tate illustrated, and Eerdmans Books for Young Readers published.
It’s also the 22nd hour of U.S. Senator Cory Booker’s epic filibuster.
It seems like a good time to dust off this poster featuring a quote from U.S. Representative Lynch’s 1875 speech on a civil rights bill.
And this month is an equally appropriate time for a giveaway of four signed copies of The Amazing Age of John Roy Lynch to subscribers to my monthly Bartography Express newsletter (folks can sign up here).
If you’d like to be one of the winners, by the end of this month either say so in the comments below or contact me directly, and you’ll be in the running. (Subscribers with U.S. mailing addresses only.)
And if you know another reader, family member, educator, or librarian who might appreciate a copy of The Amazing Age of John Roy Lynch, won’t you please let them know, too?
Don and I were friends and critique partners before we began making books together. In fact, he sat at my kitchen table in 2006 and gave me notes on my unfinished first draft of the manuscript this book.
In both my text and his art, we were frank and honest with our readers about the history of this country — and especially the history of Reconstruction.
I’m so glad that, thanks to our book, a generation of kids has had the opportunity to grow up with a better education about that period than I ever had.
Our next book together turned our pretty well, too.

Of course I’m signing up for the monthly book giveaway! Love reading your newsletters and appreciate your ongoing support of young readers and libraries!!
Signing up for the giveaway! Thanks.
