Last week was the 64th anniversary of Ax Handle Saturday, the attack on young civil rights protestors in Jacksonville, Florida, that’s detailed near the end of my nonfiction picture book Moving Forward: From Space-Age Rides to Civil Rights Sit-Ins with Airman Alton Yates (illustrated by Steffi Walthall and published by Beach Lane Books/Simon & Schuster).

Coincidentally, last week I stumbled upon Freedom Is Not Free: Ax Handle Saturday, an online exhibit curated recently by Antonette Jones while she was a student at the University of Florida. Jones interviewed Rodney Hurst, president of the NAACP Youth Council at the time of the attack (Alton Yates was vice president), and she gathered photos, assembled a visual timeline that shows where and when the events that day unfolded, and follows up on what happened afterwards.

For readers of Moving Forward who want more context about the book’s climactic event, Jones’s exhibit does an outstanding job, and I highly recommend it.
