Librarian Jennifer LaGarde has a wonderful new podcast called The Reader’s Heart, and I was so honored to be among her first guests.

(Authors featured on other episodes have included John Schu, Chrystal D. Giles, Lisa Fipps, Kyle Lukoff, and the often-confused-with-me-and-vice-versa-but-that’s-another-story Chris Baron.)

Among other things, I talked with Jennifer about the teacher I had in second grade and again in fourth grade (Ann Garrett was her name; I have no idea where she is now) who played key roles in my story as a writer and as a reader.

And we talked about the year in between, when my dad died — and how, perhaps not so coincidentally, I see third graders as being right in the center of the audience I write for.

I hope you’ll give us a listen.
